Is it worth the read:
In short, yes it is. This is one of those books that I will read over and over again. It is full of wisdom that helps me see exactly what I need to focus on within myself to meet any obstacle that pops up in my path.
What’s it all about:
Sometimes I read a book and I want to recommend it to every single person I come into contact with. The Obstacle is the Way The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph by Ryan Holiday is one of those books. I found myself discussing it with my wife Amy as I was reading it and telling our coworkers about it. Holiday’s writing style was refreshing when compared to other books dealing with personal development or philosophy. He uses the stories of historical figures to illustrate his points and then gives commentary on what this means to us in everyday life. His philosophy is heavily influenced but the Ancient Greek Stoic philosophers like Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus but he distills their thoughts into something that is totally germane to life today. This is not one of those books that leaves you with a ton of motivation but no actionable points to actually put into practice in your life. I would hear a story about a historical figure who was faced with a seemingly insurmountable obstacle and I would think about situations in my life where something similar had happened and I would see how I could have handled it differently. This is a book that will make you think about your life and your attitudes towards all of the things you go through. If I would have read this book many years ago I would have saved myself an immense amount of complaining, complacency, and self sabotage.
Who should read this book:
I feel that this book will honestly benefit anyone who reads it just as it has benefited me. No matter what your profession this book will help you see that you are the only one who can make you persevere and you are the only one who controls your happiness. It also shows that anyone who has ever done anything great has faced crazy obstacles along the way. We all are in the same boat.

“Each time, you’ll learn something. Each time, you’ll develop strength, wisdom, and perspective. Each time, a little more of the competition falls away. Until all that is left is you: the best version of you.”
“Take what you’re afraid of—when fear strikes you—and break it apart.”
